Legal-Ease: Signing the Declaration of Independence then and signing receipts now

We sign various documents all the time, and what our signature means changes depending upon what’s being signed. Sometimes signing a document confirms certain facts, other times a signature is a commitment, and sometimes signatures mean absolutely nothing.

For example, signing for the delivery of an item that’s already paid for just confirms the receipt of an item. But signing a credit card slip represents a promise to pay for goods.

Legal-Ease: Different states, different laws

It should be apparent to anyone who travels or follows the news that different states have different laws. Participants in a transaction or contract can actually outline which state’s law will apply to disputes that arise over their agreement.

Legal-Ease: Formal and informal loans and repayment

Sometimes people seek money lending through methods other than the traditional bank, credit union or professional financial business. Some people use payday lenders and vehicle title holding loans, which have persisted through attempts at increased regulation on the state and local level. People may also find themselves in a situation where they are forced to reach out to friends and family for loans.

Legal-Ease: Valuing components of co-owned property

Sometimes we can find ourselves co-owning property with one or more co-owners wanting to be bought out. Even if we are in the process of converting ownership of the co-owned property into assets owned by an LLC, it becomes important to value the property and each person’s portion.

Legal-Ease: Do I need a trust?

Trusts can be thought of as contracts. They allow people to impose rules on inheritances, minimizing or eliminating estate taxes, if necessary. The “trustee” of the trust can distribute the property owned.

Legal-Ease: I lost a loved one; now what?

The first step to saying goodbye to a family member involves taking your time to suitably grieve and be together with family and friends. One of the practicalities following a loved one passing away is hiring an attorney to help sort through and change ownership of assets.
